Keep Slidell Beautiful is one of 100 organizations across the U.S. to receive funding for a garden or green space. The garden is part of The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company’s GRO1000 initiative, designed to create 1,000 gardens and green spaces throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe by 2018, the Company’s 150th anniversary.
KSB will use the $500 grant funds towards the Slidell Senior Citizens Center Landscaping Project. According to Executive Director Bill Mauser, “KSB was looking for a major project to do in 2011. When we found out there was no funding available from the City or FEMA for landscaping at the new Senior Citizen’s Center, KSB adopted that as its project for the year.”
KSB applied for several grants and was excited to learn that it had received the first grant for the project from Scotts Miracle-Gro. Mauser said, “It is our hope that through the development of this space and working with our senior citizens, we can bring our community closer together, and provide a means for seniors to enjoy the outdoors, to engage in gardening activities, and to stay physically active.”
Partnering with KSB on the project are the Slidell Beautification Committee, Chamber of Commerce Leadership Slidell Class, City of Slidell, Council on Aging St. Tammany (COAST), Green Team School students, Louisiana Master Gardeners Program, Ozone Camellia Club, Slidell Police Department, and the Slidell Tree Board.
KSB hopes to begin the project in the very near future. Check our website at www.keepslidellbeautiful.org to get updates on the Slidell Senior Citizen’s Landscaping Project. To make a monetary donation, or to donate your time, materials, or talent, call Mr. Mauser at 265-5029 or 646-4307.
